UK Society of Celebrants Newsletter - January 2014

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2014 and Happy New Year to you and yours.

We are looking forward to continue building upon our successes of 2013 by helping you become the best celebrant you can be.

Writing Competition
Thanks to all that entered the “ Celebrant Tale” Competition at the end of 2013. Judging by the entries, there are many “wannabe” authors / comics / satirists out there, with quality writing & story telling skills that may soon be utilised in the world of celebrancy. Many of the submissions will be featured in future newsletters starting with the winner in next month’s issue. Congratulations to the winner Colin Trelawny from Manchester for his story entitled “Super CC- aka the Super Civil Celebrant”. Colin will soon be joining us and embarking on his prize Diploma Course.

New Training Centre
We hope you have all realised that at the UK Society of Celebrants we are very aware of the need to provide quality training and mentorship in as “cost effective “ manner as possible. To this end we have “bitten the bullet” and committed to the long term by securing a state of the art training and administration centre here in the City of Lincoln with effect from 15 January 2014.

The Terrace
Our New Training Centre is located at The Terrace, Grantham Street, Lincoln. LN2 1BD. It is a Prime City Centre Location, easily accessible with an onsite bistro called Café Portico.
We have tried having multiple centres of operation, which in the long term would have resulted in significant increases in both course fees and membership fees. As a bulk of our celebrant training is via distance learning, our geographical location is of little significance – so for the medium to long term we can keep costs lower by remaining in Lincoln alone. As a result there will be no further increases in Course Fess for all of 2014 and Membership fees are now fixed until 2016.

We will still be holding “ad hoc” courses at varying locations around the UK (as mentioned in previous newsletters) subject to demand.


Celebrant Training
Many of you will be aware of the survey we carried out regarding our Group Training Courses. Many thanks for your feedback and we are implementing several changes as a result with effect from this month.

Survey Feedback

Group Sizes - Comment: Overall candidates were very satisfied with their courses, however, many said that their courses would be more beneficial with a smaller group (currently 8 people maximum)

Action: With immediate effect. Group Training Courses will be limited to a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of 4. This will in effect enable every candidate to have double the practise time as well as enhanced direct interaction with both their group members and their tutor. We are confident that no other celebrant training provider can match our candidate to tutor ratio, training location and expertise.

In addition to the above, with effect from 27 January 2014, we will be hosting Family, Funeral & Civil Celebrancy Courses weekly for both Group & Personal Tuition Courses. Funeral & Civil Courses will commence at 1000 every Monday (except on bank holidays) & Family Courses will commence every Thursday (except the week of Good Friday) We anticipate that this change will negate the need to continue to have a waiting / cancellation list for our group courses.

Accommodation - Comment: Many candidates said that they would have preferred to make their own arrangements for accommodation during their courses for reasons of cost, convenience & choice.

Action: With effect from 27 January 2014, all newly registered group and personal tuition course fees will no longer include accommodation costs. That said, we will still assist candidates to secure accommodation at cost upon request.

Member Resources - Comment: we have received comments from many candidates regarding difficulties they had accessing our online celebrant resources.

Action: we were aware of some technical difficulties on our website which we believe have now been fully resolved. Member Resources is constantly being developed and we will make announcements of any upgrades in our newsletters.

UKSOC Website
Some of you may have noticed that our website has had somewhat of a revamp and rebranding. We hope you like the new look and hope you will let us know if you have any positive or critical comments regarding the site or anything else we do for that matter.

Celebrants Online
We are pleased to report that more of you are starting to take an interest in your own “web presence” and the positive effect it can have on your practise. Remember, as members you will always get free, impartial and practical help from your mentors in relation to your online activities which include, building blogs & websites, twitter, facebook, g+ , cross promotions etc.

This month we have started having a different Featured Celebrant on each page of our website. In the near future we hope to be able to rotate these features on a daily basis. This means that apart from your profile page, you will likely be featured on another page too. Furthermore, newly qualified celebrants can get a personal press release, which can enhance their online visibility significantly.
