Not a well thought our proposition
Open Days?
It has come to our attention that certain civil celebrant training providers are holding one-off / special "open days". Whoo...hooo!

Perversely, these providers are charging attendees for the privilege and promising them a discount of the same amount off any course they might take.................. apologies, we just had to pick ourselves up of the floor!

The sources of our apparent derision are clear and simple:
  • We work from a permanent purpose built office & training facility that actually exists and is open to the public during office hours or even by appointment - NO Charge.
  • Our visitors & guests are always made welcome and refreshments are always provided - NO Charge.
  • We have no need to arbitrarily advertise across the internet and pass on that cost to our celebrant trainees through their course fees.
  • ANYONE - can hire a hotel or conference facility anywhere to host an Open Day. I guess it is required for those who operate through a "rent-a-nice-address" provider and have their actual office in their garden shed or spare bedroom - ring any bells?
Here at the UK Society of Celebrants - every day is an Open Day - just drop us a line here or call us on 0800 772 0762 to ensure one of our Tutors is available to see you. Weekend visits - strictly by appointment only please - we are celebrants too! Our doors are always open to Members & prospective celebrants alike. We won't ask you to "chip-in" for a latte or a biscuit either - promise.

Celebrant Shop
Due to popular demand, we are introducing an Online Civil Celebrant Store / Shop. This shop is intended to be a one-stop-shop for all the equipment and supplies a Civil Celebrant may need for officiating at Funerals, Weddings and Naming Ceremonies.

The shop will be open to ALL, however, it is predominantly aimed at our Members who will benefit from significant discounts.

Be sure to visit the store by clicking here and bookmark the page for future reference.

It is anticipated that the Celebrant Store will open towards the end of June 2014 - you will ALL be informed of the launch date nearer the time.

Celebrant Tales
It has been a while, but we will be resurrecting our monthly "Celebrant Tales" competition from July 2014. As previously, all entries must be your own work and between 500 & 1000 words in length. Winners will be selected by either a majority of our Tutors or by one of our Honorary Members. The prize will be a £25 Amazon Voucher and a feature in this Newsletter (if you are a Member).
Entries submitted before the 15th of a month will be included in that months competition. Entries submitted after the 15th of a month will be entered for the following months competition.

Well that is it for this month. Be Safe & Be Well

Celebrant Ceremony

Weddings : Perfect Celebrant Partners

No stretched limo required!

Do you take us, to be your perfect wedding partner?

We're delighted to let you into the secrets of how to avoid the pitfalls of cookie cutter ceremonies and truly express your own personal values on your wedding day.

When you imagine your perfect wedding day, like any other couple, you want it to be special. Whether it has traditional elements or a contemporary twist; whether it’s a small, simple affair or a larger gathering; or vintage glamour or shabby-chic style, it’s your day.

The difference is that you want your values to be an integral part of the make-up of your day, whether that be sourcing locally produced or organic food or having a re-cycled or a hired wedding dress or hiring a bus.

But it doesn't have to stop there...

Imagine being able to hold your wedding ceremony in an outdoor location such as an organic garden, a bluebell woodland or farm, or even have a ‘walking wedding’.

Imagine having the flexibility to incorporate your values into the words of your ceremony.

Well it is snowing afterall!
Imagine having the option to include symbolic gestures that represent what’s important to you both.

We’d like to open your eyes to a new range of options and a new way of getting married.

Now you don’t have to compromise and settle for a standard, registrar-led, production-line ceremony that restricts you to a licensed venue. We work with some fabulous off-the beaten-track venues and privately owned locations to help make your day truly unique to you.

We put your ceremony at the heart of your day and it sets the style and tone for the whole event.

The ceremony itself is totally bespoke; written for you and about you; personal and meaningful. Our Members will guide you through the options and help put what you want to say into words, and unlike registrar-led or humanist ceremonies we can include spiritual or secular content and references.

There are no rules or set etiquette we start with a blank piece of paper. We listen to you and your stories and create a ceremony that says this is us - this is who we are and this is what’s important to us.

Whether you want to walk down the aisle or choreograph your entrance to , White Wedding by Billy Idol or Wonderwall by Oasis - it’s entirely up to you.

And on the day we’ll be the friendly face that’s waiting for you to make those special promises to each other.

As a Wedding Celebrant Member of the UK Society of Celebrants you can rest assured that they will provide the very best in service.

You are only limited by your imagination.
Most couples choose to do the ‘legal bits’ at the Register Office the day before or on the morning of their wedding with just their two witnesses, and then they are free to hold their wedding and ceremony anywhere and at anytime - even if you do the legal bit later.

We’d love to be part of your day and help you create a memorable, wedding and meaningful personal ceremony and look forward to hearing your ideas.

Funeral Celebrants | Green Funerals? The Future is here Today!

As a Funeral Celebrant I have noticed that over recent years "Green Funerals" are becoming ever more popular. Why?  The answer is staring us in the face.

People that know me, if asked, could attribute many adjectives with regard to my personality. I very much doubt that "green" or "environmentalist" or "eco-friendly" would be amongst them.

Here in the UK, we have limited space and a high population density. During the 20th Century there was a massive shift towards cremating our dead rather than burying them - arguably, due to a combination of cost, the availability of land, efficiency and a societal shift towards secularism. The latter has opened up our neighbours minds and many of us now realise that we have choices.

The cost of cremations has almost tripled over the last 10 years. Cremations are an efficient way of disposing of our dead, but in no way could they be classed as economical, environmentally friendly or individual.

The cost of traditional burials in church or municipal burial facilities have similarly increased and people seem to be oblivious to the fact that our loved ones will one day be unceremoniously dug up, buried deeper and in all likelihood have someone else, unrelated, buried on top of them.

Choice has led to the rise in popularity of Civil Funeral Celebrants as we increasingly reject religious dogma. Furthermore, in recent years we have become ever more careful with our money and as a result we actively seek ways in which to economise.

With the relatively recent advent of Civil Celebrants, "choices" and "financial prudence" - alternatives to traditional costly burials and cremations have been sought. One such alternative is "Green Burials"

By way of example I recently took the opportunity to visit  "The Orchard Burial Ground" and its owner , Paul Disley.

The Orchard is set in rural Lincolnshire, just outside Lincoln - a  beautiful oasis of calm that even under close inspection, is difficult to see that it is a Green Burial Ground ( I suppose that is the point) and is a pleasant place to be - regardless of the weather.

Graves are marked with a simple, engraved side-plate sized natural stone that lays flush to the ground to enable mowing.

Orchard Burial Ground
Paul is also a Funeral Celebrant and a Green Funeral Director. His approach to his work is authentic, reassuring, cost effective, pragmatic, respectful and unique.

Paul can provide an all inclusive funeral package (burial) from as little as £1700 . The whole process is heartfelt, meaningful, engaging, unpretentious and memorable. Furthermore, the site is open to all, regardless of any religious affiliation or not as the case may be.

When compared to traditional funeral directors, Paul goes the extra mile and offers significant savings (typically £000's). Additionally, the "carbon footprint" of such a funeral is massively lower than that of traditional funerals.

Funeral Celebrant led ceremonies can be held at a nearby picturesque community hall and / or at graveside - Paul will even lay on refreshments.

At one with Nature
The Orchard is also one of the few Green Burial Grounds in the UK that permits the burial of pet remains with their former owners.

Say NO to wasteful, unnecessarily expensive and  eco-unfriendly, conveyor-belt cremations and burials.

Say YES to Funeral Celebrant led, personal, meaningful, authentic, cost effective and eco-friendly end of life ceremonies.

The future is already here!
